
Three different products hide behind this search. One is a live sports broadcast genuinely produced and encoded in UHD. One is a 4K film sitting in a library. The third is a provider who typed 4K next to a 1080p news channel, and that third one is why people end up shouting at a television that is working perfectly.
Our position is dull and easy to check: folders are labelled 4K where the encode is 4K, and everything else keeps its HD or FHD label. There is no surcharge for resolution, which is why the price list is one line, $14 / $36 / $47 / $69 for a single screen, and why it does not sprout a premium tier further down this page.

What actually decides whether you see any of it is bitrate, the thermals of whatever is decoding, and the wireless link in the last three metres. Serving you HD when the production truck never shot UHD is not a downgrade, it is the only honest thing to do.
Resolution belongs to the feed
A plan name carrying the word 4K on every tier tells you about the marketing department. The camera, the contribution link, and the encode tell you about the picture.
Local news will be HD for the rest of this decade. A major football or basketball production may well have a UHD copy on the night.
Both sit inside the same login, and asking whether the whole service is 4K is a question the medium cannot answer.
Where we have UHD sport and UHD on-demand, they get their own groups. Where a 4K copy of a particular match does not exist on the night, nobody can conjure one. Chat can look for it; chat cannot dispatch a production truck.
Be specific about which of the three products you want. UHD sport and a UHD film behave completely differently, and the advice for each is different too.
What the numbers actually say
The FCC Broadband Speed Guide puts Ultra HD 4K at 25 Mbps, with ordinary high definition sitting far below that in the 5 to 8 range. Use 25 as a planning floor for one stream measured at the television, not as a ceiling, and remember it is per stream.
A second UHD picture in another room is additive, and so is everything else the house is doing.
Sport is the punishing case within that. Constant motion, grass texture, crowds, and graphics all cost bits, so a UHD football feed can want noticeably more headroom than a film that spends long stretches nearly still.
Certifying a live sports row using a movie is how people convince themselves everything is fine and then get a nasty surprise on a Saturday.
There is a smaller trap worth knowing about. Audio passthrough to a soundbar can push a marginal device over the edge while the symptom looks purely like a video problem.
If UHD is stable until you switch on bitstream audio, try plain stereo output and settle the audio argument after the match.
There is no 8K tier here
Liberty's public trial stickers mentioned 8K. In practice 8K live broadcasting is not something living rooms receive in any volume that should influence a checkout, and charging extra for a row labelled 8K would mean charging for a rename.

High dynamic range is a separate conversation and a genuinely inconsistent one on live sport. If the player tone-maps a match into grey mush, force standard dynamic range and watch the game.
Upscaled 1080p sitting inside a 4K wrapper is the other thing to watch for; on a large screen it looks soft, and we would rather tell you a row is an upscale than let you hunt for a fault that is not there.
Testing UHD without fooling yourself
On-demand files are the fair laboratory because you can seek. Jump twenty minutes into a UHD film rather than watching the opening credits, which are easy on any encoder.
Stuttering only at the moment you seek points at the player cache. Stuttering whenever the frame gets busy points at bitrate or decoding.
Live UHD cannot be seeked, so it has to be endured. Leave it running through a passage with real crowd movement.
A glance at minute one proves nothing and a smear at minute twelve is still a failure. Where both a UHD and an FHD copy of the same event exist, compare them: one clean and one soupy is a useful fact, both soupy points at your network.
The last three metres decide more of this than any provider does. A crowded low band will not carry UHD however good the source is, and mesh systems love to park a television on a distant node while the phone in your hand sits comfortably on a close one.
Walk the handset over to the set before you trust any speed reading. Where the airwaves in a building are genuinely congested, a cable to a small router beside the television is ugly and it ends the conversation.
Finally, test on the device you watch on. A phone playing the same channel at 1080p tells you nothing about whether a stick can hold four times the pixels, and a device that is uncomfortably hot after twenty minutes has already given you the answer.
HD is most of television
This is not a consolation prize. News, most regional channels, and a great deal of international programming are produced in HD, and stamping a UHD label on them would only generate tickets nobody can resolve.
Watch the HD row and save the bandwidth argument for the match that genuinely has a UHD production behind it.
Nothing here costs more because of resolution. The month includes whatever UHD exists, the year includes the same, and a cheaper competitor's year does not conjure additional pixels into anyone's living room either.
